15 June 2010 - Luncheon with Lt. General
John C Allen, USMC, Deputy Commander of USCentCom.
On June 15th, a sellout crowd of USNA
Alumni and Navy Leaguers were honored to have Lieutenant General John R.
Allen, Deputy Commander, U. S. Central Command and USNA ’76, speak at our
monthly luncheon! Introductions were made by Steve Carrington ’92 and Jim
Gallagher ’57. Steve described how General Allen had been one of Steve’s
USNA instructors and the effect General Allen had on Steve and his career.
Jim completed the intro citing General Allen’s long family history in Ohio
and Cincinnati.
General Allen delivered an excellent presentation on
the role of the Central Command in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He provided a
lucid description of the situation on the ground in Afghanistan and we were
all encouraged by his comments and prognosis for success. We can all be
proud and thankful that our country has individuals with General Allen’s
ability and character in such positions of authority.

Lou Brothers, Valley
Forge Composite Technologies Luncheon, April 14, 2010
On April 14, USNA Alumni and the Navy League
gathered at the Montgomery Inn to hear a talk by Mr.
Lou Brothers,
President of Valley Forge
Composite Technologies. Lou’s company has developed a low-energy gamma ray
technology to survey shipping containers, baggage and people for fissile
material, explosives and narcotics. The technology is fast, has never given
a “false positive” and causes extremely low radiation exposure. The new
technology has been under development for eight years with the support of
the US Department of Energy and is now ready for commercialization.
Lou is shown seated below (he’s #1) with Navy Leaguers, two priests and two
young ladies representing US Congresswoman Jean Schmidt!
Luncheon with Frank Weishaupt,
Wednesday March 10, 2010
On March 10th, Mr Frank Weishaupt was the
featured speaker at the joint USNA/Navy League Montgomery Inn luncheon. Well
over 100 attendees were treated to one of most intriguing presentations
ever!
Frank described growing up in a Cincinnati German
immigrant family with a father who had served in the German Army in WW1.
Speaking fluent German with no American accent, he joined the U.S. Navy as
WWII started and was secretly funneled into the OSS, the forerunner of the
CIA . Shortly before D-day, he met personally with General Patton and Bill
Donovan (OSS) in London. He landed in France on D-day plus 2 carrying a
bicycle over his head and a Swiss passport! From D-day until Germany’s
surrender, Frank was able to use his keen intellect and German language
skills to travel freely behind German lines and in the battle zone. He
described how he was able to mingle with the Germans to gather intelligence
on German tank/troop movements. He was able to return to the American side
periodically and relay info personally to General Patton! He was once
prevented from talking to General Montgomery who was at his “afternoon tea.”
He described numerous incidents. A Frenchman recruited
by the OSS turned out to be a German spy lured Frank and another OSS agent
to a French Farm for dinner. A German soldier emerged from the barn with a
grenade killing Frank’s OSS partner and wounding Frank. He was able to kill
the German and the French OSS spy by pulling a pistol from his boot, the
same boots he wore to this presentation 65 years later! |
|
He also described escorting a young French woman home from a café
one night because of her fear of German soldiers. Three Germans attacked
them late in the evening. While one guarded Frank, the two others attacked
the young woman. As the guard looked on, Frank was able to slit his throat
with his dad’s WW1 knife, hidden in backpack. He then saved the young lady
by shooting both Germans between the eyes as they perpetrated their evil
deed.
Frank has kept these stories secret for the past 65 years! After
returning from the war, Frank quietly returned the knife he had borrowed
from his Dad back to its shelf…his Dad used the knife for many years after
to skin rabbits. What a story…a book is in the works! |

Ken Lucas Luncheon, January 21, 2010
On January 21st, a group of 50 USNA and Navy
League members attended a luncheon at the Montgomery Inn to hear Ken Lucas,
former US congressman and current Kentucky Director of Veterans Affairs. Ken
gave a good overview of the functions performed by state Veterans Affairs
organizations as compared with the federal government. Most veterans are
Army veterans. Ken said that improved medical technology and PTSD have
resulted in the need to assist veterans who in past wars may not have even
survived. The just reported Senate race in Mass. provided the source of
lively discussions at many of the luncheon tables!

December 2009 Service Academy Ball
On December
30, 2009, the Tri-State All Service Academy Ball was held in Cincinnati.
The attendees included families along with midshipmen and cadets from all
service academies. The chapter vice president, Tom Schram '69, was asked to
be the guest speaker at the event and also handed out American flags
packaged in a wooden case, each of which had flown over our Nation's
Capitol. Tom's theme in the address was to always remember that the word
"quit" is not in the vocabulary of a service academy graduate.
