Birdies for the Brave Golf Event – Tournament Players Club at Rivers Bend,
This event is being heavily supported by USNA AA and various members.
Jon Sanchez will be introducing the guest speaker, LCOL Brad Wenstrup USAR
(MC) and an Iraq veteran with a Bronze Star. Please go to this link to
learn more about “Birdies for the Brave” which is the PGA Tour sponsored
program for eight various veteran organizations.
http://www.birdiesforthebrave.org/
As
the volunteer chairman for this event for two years, 2006 and 2007, we
raised over $550,000 for these very worth organizations. You can expect to
meet veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, wounded warriors who will be out
there to thank you for your support and many others who want to be there for
the organization.
I
was a member at TPC Rivers Bend for almost 10 years and as a 5.2 handicap
golfer (back when my back let me play), I felt that although I’d played all
over the world and the U.S., including Pebble Beach, this course was the
most demanding and FAIR course I’d ever been on. No two holes are alike in
any way, the par 5’s are reachable but challenging, and it is just a pure
delight, for golfers of any handicap. Expect to meet veterans on each tee,
supporters, their wives, and many others.
In
my mind, this is THE premier golf outing of the year for military support.
Anthony Munoz will be the MC and you will find him humorous and
approachable. He’s a huge fan of the military and his family has provided
us (veterans and active duty alike) with unwavering support.

Army – Navy Happy Hour .
The president of the local West Point Society, Jason Cornett, and I have
been collaborating to get our groups together in advance of the Army – Navy
football game event, which we intend to do jointly. As a warm up, we
thought a joint happy hour would be a great starter. We’ve had a happy hour
there before, the staff was very attentive, and we thought this would be a
nice event. You will get more information about this in a later email as I
remind you.

Veteran’s Day, November 12, 2011
Cincinnati World Affairs Council presents LGEN Lawrence Snowden USMC (Ret.).
This is another event, like the TPC, that deserves your attention and
consideration. LGEN Snowden is a veteran of WW II, Korea, and Viet Nam
(where he commanded an entire USMC Division). I have read a number of LGEN
Snowden’s speeches and let me tell you, he does not spare anyone in his
laser like articulation of what we did right, what we did wrong, and what we
should be doing in the future of asymmetrical warfare. He is entertaining,
blunt (I know that’s a surprise for a Marine), and inspiring.
His grandson lives in
Cincinnati and thus we were able to get him to come to this event. He will
be spending all of November 10 visiting our wounded veterans in the Greater
Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area.
Here are the details from the
World Affairs Council:
Dinner and Discussion with Lieutenant General
Lawrence F. Snowden (USMC ret.):
Please join us, and the Greater Cincinnati World Affairs Council, on
November 11th in welcoming Lieutenant General Snowden to Cincinnati. General
Snowden saw service in three major wars (WW II, Korea, and Vietnam),
finishing his 37 year career as Chief of Staff for U.S. Marine Corp HQ.
General Snowden will offer an informed and interesting perspective on the
country’s recent decade of war on terrorism.
To register for the evening dinner with General Snowden please visit “www.cincyworldaffairs.org”
or phone Katie Krafka at 513-621-5222. Details follow…
Date: November 11, 2011
Time: 6:00PM – 9:00PM
Location: Sharonville Convention Center, 11355 Chester Road, Cincinnati,
Ohio 45246
In case you are wondering
what the Cincinnati World Affairs Council does, you can go to this site to
learn more.

They are serving our
community in a superb way by making educational opportunities available to
regional schools and classrooms on world affairs, and “no” it’s not what
appears in the newspaper. Our children need to know more about the world
and what’s going on. Who among us could disagree with that mission
statement? Remember how we all had to memorize at least two stories from
the front page of the newspaper for morning chow and come-arounds. That
practice served me very well.
Please try to attend this
event. The West Point Society will be circulating this information also.

General McChrystal Visits Cincinnati
General Stanley McChrystal was the featured guest at a
“Yellow Ribbon” fundraiser on April 30th. The function, sponsored
by Jonathan Sanchez ’95 (a former Navy SEAL) and his wife Anya, was attended
by over 100 guests including Navy SEALs and Special Forces members who
served as bartenders, Annie McChrystal, and a host of Navy, West Point and
Navy League representatives.
The General was introduced by Brad Thor, New York Times
bestselling author. General McChrystal gave an inspiring talk on the work
the Yellow Ribbon Fund does to support our wounded warriors. The event
included a silent auction and raised over $40,000 for the Yellow Ribbon
fund. We learned the following day that Osama Bin Laden had been killed by
Navy SEALs!

Naval Academy Superintendent Speaks in Cincinnati
VADM Michael Miller, the new USNA Superintendent, was
the featured speaker at The George E Brown Lecture Series, sponsored by the
Greater Cincinnati Council of the Navy League and USNA Alumni Association
Cincinnati Chapter. The October 18th event was held at Paul
Brown Stadium and attended by over 250 Navy Leaguers, USNA Alumni, local
community and military leaders, NROTC Midshipmen, prospective USNA
Midshipmen and their parents, and the Cincinnati Division of the Sea Cadets,
who served as side boys for VADM Miller and provided the color guard. Bud
Babcock, VADM Miller’s classmate in the class of 1974, provided a warm
introduction for VADM Miller, with amusing anecdotes from their days at the
Academy.
In his remarks, VADM Miller gave an excellent overview
of what’s going on at USNA, and discussed how important the concepts of
honor and ethics are inextricably linked with effective leadership, and how
he is ensuring these concepts continue to be part of the total experience of
today’s Midshipmen.

15 June 2010 - Luncheon with Lt. General
John C Allen, USMC, Deputy Commander of USCentCom.
On June 15th, a sellout crowd of USNA
Alumni and Navy Leaguers were honored to have Lieutenant General John R.
Allen, Deputy Commander, U. S. Central Command and USNA ’76, speak at our
monthly luncheon! Introductions were made by Steve Carrington ’92 and Jim
Gallagher ’57. Steve described how General Allen had been one of Steve’s
USNA instructors and the effect General Allen had on Steve and his career.
Jim completed the intro citing General Allen’s long family history in Ohio
and Cincinnati.
General Allen delivered an excellent presentation on
the role of the Central Command in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He provided a
lucid description of the situation on the ground in Afghanistan and we were
all encouraged by his comments and prognosis for success. We can all be
proud and thankful that our country has individuals with General Allen’s
ability and character in such positions of authority.

Lou Brothers, Valley
Forge Composite Technologies Luncheon, April 14, 2010
On April 14, USNA Alumni and the Navy League
gathered at the Montgomery Inn to hear a talk by Mr.
Lou Brothers,
President of Valley Forge
Composite Technologies. Lou’s company has developed a low-energy gamma ray
technology to survey shipping containers, baggage and people for fissile
material, explosives and narcotics. The technology is fast, has never given
a “false positive” and causes extremely low radiation exposure. The new
technology has been under development for eight years with the support of
the US Department of Energy and is now ready for commercialization.
Lou is shown seated below (he’s #1) with Navy Leaguers, two priests and two
young ladies representing US Congresswoman Jean Schmidt!
Luncheon with Frank Weishaupt,
Wednesday March 10, 2010
On March 10th, Mr Frank Weishaupt was the
featured speaker at the joint USNA/Navy League Montgomery Inn luncheon. Well
over 100 attendees were treated to one of most intriguing presentations
ever!
Frank described growing up in a Cincinnati German
immigrant family with a father who had served in the German Army in WW1.
Speaking fluent German with no American accent, he joined the U.S. Navy as
WWII started and was secretly funneled into the OSS, the forerunner of the
CIA . Shortly before D-day, he met personally with General Patton and Bill
Donovan (OSS) in London. He landed in France on D-day plus 2 carrying a
bicycle over his head and a Swiss passport! From D-day until Germany’s
surrender, Frank was able to use his keen intellect and German language
skills to travel freely behind German lines and in the battle zone. He
described how he was able to mingle with the Germans to gather intelligence
on German tank/troop movements. He was able to return to the American side
periodically and relay info personally to General Patton! He was once
prevented from talking to General Montgomery who was at his “afternoon tea.”
He described numerous incidents. A Frenchman recruited
by the OSS turned out to be a German spy lured Frank and another OSS agent
to a French Farm for dinner. A German soldier emerged from the barn with a
grenade killing Frank’s OSS partner and wounding Frank. He was able to kill
the German and the French OSS spy by pulling a pistol from his boot, the
same boots he wore to this presentation 65 years later! |
|
He also described escorting a young French woman home from a café
one night because of her fear of German soldiers. Three Germans attacked
them late in the evening. While one guarded Frank, the two others attacked
the young woman. As the guard looked on, Frank was able to slit his throat
with his dad’s WW1 knife, hidden in backpack. He then saved the young lady
by shooting both Germans between the eyes as they perpetrated their evil
deed.
Frank has kept these stories secret for the past 65 years! After
returning from the war, Frank quietly returned the knife he had borrowed
from his Dad back to its shelf…his Dad used the knife for many years after
to skin rabbits. What a story…a book is in the works! |

Ken Lucas Luncheon, January 21, 2010
On January 21st, a group of 50 USNA and Navy
League members attended a luncheon at the Montgomery Inn to hear Ken Lucas,
former US congressman and current Kentucky Director of Veterans Affairs. Ken
gave a good overview of the functions performed by state Veterans Affairs
organizations as compared with the federal government. Most veterans are
Army veterans. Ken said that improved medical technology and PTSD have
resulted in the need to assist veterans who in past wars may not have even
survived. The just reported Senate race in Mass. provided the source of
lively discussions at many of the luncheon tables!

Midshipman 1/c Shelly Moeller of Cincinnati. |
December 2009 Service Academy Ball
On December
30, 2009, the Tri-State All Service Academy Ball was held in Cincinnati.
The attendees included families along with midshipmen and cadets from all
service academies. The chapter vice president, Tom Schram '69, was asked to
be the guest speaker at the event and also handed out American flags
packaged in a wooden case, each of which had flown over our Nation's
Capitol. Tom's theme in the address was to always remember that the word
"quit" is not in the vocabulary of a service academy graduate.
